Landspath was founded on a simple premise: Trupanion helps pet owners budget for care, and veterinarians are experts at treating disease effectively.
Landspath's goal is to help reduce the incidence of illness and minimize its severity, while returning veterinarians to the center of nutrition, adherence, and preventive care.
Landspath is sold and managed exclusively by veterinarians to support a pet's nutritional needs. Personalized to each pet's biology, customized by the veterinarian's clinical assessment, and individually prepared for every meal, Landspath is designed to evolve as each pet's health changes.
Twenty-five years ago, Trupanion was founded with a clear goal: to help loving, responsible pet owners budget and care for their cats and dogs.
From the outset, the goal was not to interfere with veterinary decision-making, but to support it.
Trupanion deliberately chose to avoid the cost-cutting mechanisms common in other insurance companies - benefit fee schedules, congenital and hereditary exclusions, provider networks, penalizing unlucky pets, and pricing that increases due to pets aging, the old bait and switch model.
The real opportunity lay in fairness, transparency, and alignment. Rather than spreading costs broadly and opaquely, Trupanion created a fundamentally actuarial approach with breed-specific pricing to reflect real, hereditary risk differences (English Bulldogs versus Shih Tzus) and geography-based pricing to account for true local costs of care (New York City versus Boise, ID).
Trupanion calculated the average cost over a pet's life, added a small margin, and set a fair price.
This structure ensured that a pet owner in Boise was not subsidizing the cost of care in New York City, and that the risk profile of an English Bulldog was not the same as that of a Shih Tzu. The result was a system that is predictable, understandable, and fair to all involved.
To date, Trupanion has paid billions of dollars directly to veterinarians, making it easier for pets to get care when they need it.
